They arrived at a large house, which Alessandro thought he recognised. The guards at the door appeared to know his uncle and Alessandro wondered if he had been brought here previously when he was younger. Inside, the house had high ceilings and many highly polished tables, chairs, and gold ornaments. The walls were painted white and everything was lighter and brighter than in his uncle’s home. A young man dressed in black led them through a series of rooms, past a woman carrying a tray of silver goblets.

The sound of manly chatter came from a room behind a set of tall double doors. His uncle pushed them open and Alessandro immediately felt everyone’s eyes on him. A group of men in fine, colourful clothing sat around a large table and stared.

Alessandro was distracted by the enormous tapestries on the walls. He had never seen anything like them before: unclothed people were bathing in a lake and feeding each other grapes in a heavenly-looking place with rolling green fields, mountains and trees. The place bore no resemblance to the narrow, crooked streets and dingy home he had known all his life.

His uncle grabbed his shoulder roughly and he was pushed forward so that everyone could get a closer look at him. One of the men seemed more important than the others because his bright purple hat was the largest. He also had a strange beard, which grew down the centre of his chin, reminding Alessandro of a cat’s tail. He didn’t like the man’s eyes; they seemed to stare right into his soul.

Alessandro looked away and the man addressed him in Italian. ‘You are growing into a fine young man,’ he said.

Alessandro realised the man was being friendly, so he looked up at him again.

‘You were only a baby when I saw you last. I thought your arrival would cause us trouble, but thankfully your uncle has done a good job of raising you in the absence of your parents.’

Alessandro knew that the important man was wrong. He wanted to tell him that his uncle beat him when he hadn’t done anything wrong, but he knew this was not the time to say such a thing so he kept quiet.

‘Have you anything you would like to say to us, boy?’ asked the important man.

Alessandro glanced up at his uncle.

‘Say something to Signor Savonarola,’ he ordered.

‘I would like to say that I wish my mother and father were here today to see me dressed in these fine clothes.’

There was a chuckle of appreciation around the table and Alessandro felt relieved to hear it.

‘They would be very proud of you, Alessandro Casali. Very proud indeed,’ said Savonarola. ‘You may sit by the window while we hold our meeting.’

There was a stool by one of the windows and Alessandro perched on it while his uncle joined the men at the table. They all drank from the silver goblets and Alessandro felt privileged to be seated in this room with the enormous tapestries. It was much better than having to clean muck in the streets.
